Earlier this week, news broke that the Jaguars and quarterback Trevor Lawrence are in ongoing discussions for a contract extension. With the fifth-year option in place, Lawrence is secured with the team until 2025, providing ample time for negotiations.

The option comes at a price of $25.66 million, which is significantly lower than what top quarterbacks usually earn. Although Lawrence hasn’t met expectations yet, the Jaguars see him as a long-term asset. Typically, young quarterbacks are extended after three years in the league, making 2024 a likely time for Lawrence’s deal.

General manager Trent Baalke confirmed that talks will be lengthy, similar to the process with Josh Allen’s recent contract extension. While Allen’s deal is done, Lawrence’s will be more expensive and requires patience. Baalke emphasized that they’re working on it, with ownership and coach Doug Pederson involved, aiming for a resolution soon.

Pederson’s arrival in 2022 raised hopes that Lawrence would improve from a tough rookie season under Urban Meyer. Despite reaching the playoffs in Meyer’s tenure, the team regressed last season, partly due to Lawrence’s injuries. Consequently, it might be challenging for Lawrence to command a deal like Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson, and Jalen Hurts, whose contracts last offseason pushed the top of the quarterback market past $50 million per year.

As the quarterback market continues to grow, Lawrence stands to benefit, and the progress of contract talks in the upcoming weeks will be worth watching.
