On Saturday, during their game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Petco Park in San Diego, California, the San Diego Padres found themselves without a player and a manager after only the first inning. Padres’ left fielder, Jurickson Profar, was called out on strikes by home plate umpire Ramon De Jesus on a close pitch. Profar’s strikeout left two runners on base and concluded the inning with the Blue Jays leading 3-0.
Profar’s reaction to the call was evident as he expressed his frustration by forcefully hitting his bat and then his helmet. His display of discontent resulted in an ejection by umpire Ramon De Jesus, who perceived it as disrespectful. Padres’ manager, Mike Shildt, intervened to contest the decision but found himself ejected as well.
Following Profar’s ejection, Jose Azocar took over as the backup outfielder. Profar’s absence from the game was notable considering his strong performance, with a batting average of .296 and 13 RBIs, both of which placed him among the top three Padres players.
De Jesus has a reputation for asserting his authority on the field. The Dominican umpire gained attention on social media last season for swiftly ejecting three Texas Rangers players in a single incident.
