The Atlanta Falcons surprised many in the NFL by opting for quarterback Michael Penix Jr. as the No. 8 overall pick in the draft. Reports revealed their attempt to address a pressing need by trading up for UCLA’s edge rusher Laiatu Latu in the first round, which unfortunately fell through. Undeterred, the Falcons swiftly traded up in the second round with the Arizona Cardinals, securing former Clemson Tigers defensive lineman Ruke Orhorhoro.
In the exchange, the Falcons relinquished their own second-round pick (43rd overall) along with the third-round pick acquired for Calvin Ridley (No. 79), receiving picks No. 35 and No. 186 (6th round) in return, per Field Yates.
Standing at 6’4 and weighing 295 pounds, Orhorhoro stands out as one of the draft’s most physically gifted defensive linemen, boasting a 4.89 forty-yard dash time and a 32-inch vertical leap, contributing to an impressive relative athletic score (RAS) of 9.92.
Although the Falcons possess depth on the defensive line, contingent on Grady Jarrett’s return to full health, Orhorhoro’s addition brings youthful vigor and additional height to the mix. While he may initially serve as a backup, he offers promise for future contributions.
In his 2023 season with Clemson, Orhorhoro tallied 25 tackles and five sacks. NFL Network’s Lance Zierlein commends Orhorhoro’s growth, noting his reliance on leverage and explosiveness. Zierlein highlights areas for improvement, including maintaining focus on team goals rather than individual battles, while also acknowledging Orhorhoro’s agility and dexterity, particularly in run defense and pass rushing scenarios. Despite needing refinement in his pass-rushing techniques, Orhorhoro is seen as a rising talent with potential to become a future starter in various defensive schemes.
