Wild star forward comments on potential extension in 2025

Minnesota Wild standout forward Kirill Kaprizov can negotiate a contract extension starting July 1, 2025. While that date isn’t imminent, it still leaves a relatively short window for the Wild to demonstrate their ability to assemble a competitive team and persuade Kaprizov to stay. If they want to keep him, they need to build a team that can contend for the championship. Otherwise, Kaprizov seems inclined to explore opportunities with other teams that are already contenders.

Both owner Craig Leipold and GM Bill Guerin have acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Kaprizov’s future. Knowing that Kaprizov is focused on winning, there’s a sense of urgency to construct a winning team around him. While he’s a crucial part of it, Kaprizov requires the right supporting cast to not only reach the playoffs but also go further than just one round.

So far, there’s no clear indication that Kaprizov intends to leave, but there are also no signals that he’s committed to staying with the Wild long-term if they don’t improve their performance. Leipold admitted last fall that the uncertainty about Kaprizov’s future is something they are conscious of. “I would be dishonest if I said it’s not on our minds,” Leipold stated.

Kaprizov is Already Leaving Open the Idea of Exploring His Options

When asked about his future with the Minnesota team, Kaprizov expressed his fondness for the team and his teammates. He feels comfortable with them and believes they have the potential to compete. However, he was disappointed with how the season unfolded, and he needs to see more before making a decision.

This doesn’t mean Kaprizov is planning to leave. However, it’s clear that he won’t commit to a team that isn’t focused on winning. He has his limits of patience, and if the Wild can’t secure a spot in the top 16 and eventually in the top eight, he might consider signing with a team that can offer him that chance.
