Deion Sanders and the Buffs pulled off another recruiting coup, landing yet another talented offensive lineman from the transfer portal on Sunday. Zack Owens, formerly of Clemson, confirmed his decision to join the Boulder team.
Standing tall at 6-foot-6 and weighing in at 380 pounds, Owens, nicknamed “Flapjack,” earned his moniker for his prowess in the trenches. Originally recruited as a four-star prospect by Dabo Swinney’s Tigers, Owens hails from Eagles Landing Christian Academy in Atlanta, the same alma mater as recent CU commits Colton and Brandon Hood. This reunion also includes Buffs running back Micah Welch, who shares roots with the trio from their time in the Peachtree State.
Owens, recognized as a consensus top 300 national talent and a top 20 offensive lineman, brings versatility to CU, having played every position on the line. His adaptability was showcased when he was selected for the 2023 All-American Bowl.

Described by 247Sports’ Gabe Brooks as one of the premier offensive line prospects in the 2023 recruiting cycle, Owens is seen as having the potential to become a impactful multi-year starter at the high-major level. Brooks notes Owens’ impressive physical traits, suggesting he could ascend to a prominent position in the NFL Draft.
With Owens’ addition, Colorado has now secured 34 players from the transfer portal this year, bringing their total back to negative two as the window remains open until April 30th.
Having played in just two games at Clemson and redshirting to preserve his eligibility, Owens enters CU with four years of eligibility remaining, starting this season.
