Indiana strengthened its secondary with the acquisition of DJ Warnell Jr. from Arizona. Warnell, a versatile defensive back standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 200 pounds, brings a wealth of experience, having spent time at both Arizona and UCLA. He joins the Hoosiers under coach Curt Cignetti with one year of eligibility remaining. Throughout his collegiate career, Warnell has demonstrated proficiency in various positions including safety, cornerback, and special teams.
During his senior year at Arizona in 2023, Warnell played in 13 games, registering 15 total tackles and three sacks. His performance earned him a respectable 64.7 defense grade from Pro Football Focus (PFF), placing him 14th among Arizona defenders. Additionally, Warnell’s versatility is reflected in his grades across different aspects of the game, with notable rankings in tackling, coverage, pass rushing, and run defense.
Prior to his time at Arizona, Warnell began his college journey at UCLA, where he showcased his skills in backup roles and special teams during the 2021 season. As a freshman in 2020, he made his initial contributions to the team, gradually solidifying his presence on the field.
Warnell’s addition marks Indiana’s 24th incoming transfer for the 2024 season, signifying the team’s commitment to bolstering its roster with experienced talent.
