Brian Kelly and the LSU football staff are actively managing a busy period within the NCAA Transfer Portal, conducting ongoing evaluations. The team has already added multiple free agents this offseason to address needs, particularly at the defensive tackle position. However, their focus has now shifted to recruiting cornerbacks.
LSU recently reached out to DaShawn Jones from Wake Forest, a promising cornerback prospect who recently entered the Transfer Portal. Jones, who garnered attention from top SEC programs including LSU shortly after entering the portal, is set to visit Alabama this weekend.
With Jones’ entry into the portal, he instantly became a sought-after talent due to his impressive performance at Wake Forest, where he showcased his skills in the secondary and accrued multiple years of eligibility. In his redshirt sophomore season, Jones started nine games, recorded 37 tackles, and led his team in interceptions with three, along with two pass breakups.
Several notable schools, including Alabama, LSU, Michigan, and Ole Miss, have expressed interest in Jones as he begins the process of finding his new team. His physical attributes make him a fitting candidate for LSU’s cornerback coach, Corey Raymond, who has a history of favoring tall and lengthy cornerbacks.
While LSU’s cornerback unit shows promise, it lacks experience, with freshmen and sophomores currently leading the way. However, with the potential return of veteran Zy Alexander from injury, the team’s depth could improve, as sources suggest Alexander is progressing well in his recovery from a torn ACL.
LSU’s pursuit of DaShawn Jones signifies a targeted effort to bolster their cornerback roster, but they face stiff competition from other reputable programs in securing his commitment.
