Before the clock struck 1 PM on a cloudy Saturday afternoon, Luis Gil’s pitching arm was already generating excitement. As he warmed up in the Yankee Stadium bullpen, catcher Jose Trevino couldn’t help but wonder about the speed of Gil’s throws.
Gil’s impressive mix of fastballs, sliders, and changeups soon made a mark in the game, earning him a place in Yankees history. With 14 strikeouts, Gil set a new record for rookie pitchers in the franchise, leading the team to a 6-1 win against the White Sox.
“Thank God for giving me this chance,” Gil expressed through an interpreter. “I worked hard in the offseason to prepare myself. My goal was to give my best for the team.”
His impressive performance included striking out seven consecutive batters (and nine out of 10) starting from the fourth inning, beginning with Paul DeJong. The previous rookie strikeout record for the Yankees was held by Orlando Hernández in 1998.
Coincidentally, Gil met Hernández, who threw the ceremonial first pitch that day. Gil expressed his happiness at meeting him.
Gil’s 14 strikeouts matched the highest this season by a Major League pitcher, alongside Tyler Glasnow and Jack Flaherty. He also joined a select group of Yankees pitchers to achieve at least 14 strikeouts in a game.
“He’s got the talent for it, so it’s not surprising,” Trevino commented. “He just needs to keep attacking the zone like he did today.”
It’s fitting that Gil shares this achievement with Gerrit Cole, who has been serving as a mentor to him while recovering from injury. Cole has been helping Gil refine his technique, contributing to his recent success.
Manager Aaron Boone praised Gil’s performance, noting his exceptional fastball and secondary pitches.
Though the White Sox posed a challenge early in the game, Gil settled in and dominated with his varied pitches.
Gil’s rapid rise from Spring Training demotion to standout performer has been unexpected but welcomed by the Yankees. Scouts noticed his refined skills, which led to his swift return to the major league roster.
As Cole nears his return, questions arise about Gil’s future role in the team. While there are no strict innings limits like in the past, the Yankees will closely monitor Gil’s workload. However, it’s evident that Gil’s talent belongs in the big leagues.
“He thrives on the field,” Trevino remarked. “He savors every moment of it.”
