Richard Lovelady, initially enlisted on a minor-league contract, was recently designated for assignment by the Chicago Cubs. However, rather than letting him go without compensation, the Cubs traded him to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for left-handed pitcher Jeff Belge.
Lovelady’s stint with the Cubs was marked by disappointing performances; he pitched in seven games, totaling 5.2 innings with an ERA of 7.94. Regrettably, his tenure in Chicago didn’t meet expectations. Now, the 28-year-old southpaw has a fresh start with the Rays.
In return, Jeff Belge joins the Cubs’ ranks. The southpaw, who has primarily played in the minor leagues throughout his career, was initially drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers and has been with the Rays for the past two seasons. Belge has appeared in 11 games this season, holding a 4.20 ERA. He has spent the last two seasons competing in Double-A.
According to scouting reports, Belge enhances his fastball with a formidable 12-6 curveball and a slider.
Lovelady was designated for assignment by the Cubs to accommodate the addition of Tyson Miller to the roster.
