Alan Haller, the athletic director at Michigan State University, faced considerable challenges in the past year. One major ordeal involved the abrupt termination of the head football coach, Mel Tucker, due to allegations of misconduct towards Brenda Tracy, a survivor of sexual violence and advocate against it. Tucker’s contract, which had been extended just the year before with significant financial commitment, was terminated midway through the football season.
This incident marked a particularly difficult moment for Michigan State in 2023, but it wasn’t the sole source of drama. Shortly after Tucker’s dismissal, a significant cheating scandal unfolded involving Michigan, MSU’s rival. The scandal implicated a staffer, Connor Stalions, in an illegal sign-stealing operation. Stalions was accused of attempting to steal signs during a game between Michigan State and Central Michigan, leading to repercussions for both Michigan and Stalions, and ultimately the departure of Michigan’s head coach, Jim Harbaugh, to the NFL.
The fallout from this scandal continues to affect Haller, especially concerning Michigan State’s relationship with Central Michigan. The NCAA investigation, which is ongoing, has the potential to strain the longstanding ties between the two athletic programs. Michigan State has historically scheduled early season games with Central Michigan to support their revenue and exposure, but if the investigation implicates Stalions in wrongdoing during their matchup, it could jeopardize this relationship.
Despite the uncertainty, Central Michigan’s head coach, Jim McElwain, distanced his program from Michigan’s sign-stealing operation, emphasizing their lack of involvement and condemnation of such actions.
