Just In: Mariners obtain RHP and minor league catcher from Orioles in exchange for a minor league backstop

The Seattle Mariners acquired right-hander Mike Baumann and minor league catcher Michael Perez from the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night in exchange for minor league catcher Blake Hunt.

Baumann, designated for assignment by Baltimore on Saturday, was 1-0 with a 3.44 ERA in 17 relief appearances this season and had a 10-1 record out of the bullpen last season. Overall, Baumann, 28, has a 13-5 record with a 4.45 ERA in 94 appearances (four starts) with the Orioles over the past four seasons.

The Orioles assigned Hunt to Triple-A Norfolk, where he was batting .293 with four homers and 20 RBIs in 23 games for Triple-A Tacoma. Hunt, 25, was a second-round pick by the San Diego Padres in 2017 and had also played in the Tampa Bay Rays’ organization before being traded to the Mariners last November.

Perez, 31, was hitting .221 with two homers and 13 RBIs in 21 games at Norfolk. He has appeared in 202 major league games with a .179 average and 15 homers, having played for the Rays (2018-20), Pittsburgh Pirates (2021-22), and New York Mets (2022-23).
