Kenny Atkinson, one of Steve Kerr’s top assistants, is the leading candidate for the Cleveland Cavaliers’ vacant head coaching position, according to a report by Jason Lloyd of The Athletic on Sunday.
Atkinson has been part of the Golden State Warriors’ coaching staff for the past three seasons, playing a key role in their 2022 NBA championship run. The 56-year-old previously served as the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets from 2016 to 2020, where he oversaw a significant team turnaround.
During the Warriors’ battle with the Boston Celtics in the 2022 NBA Finals, Atkinson reportedly agreed to become the head coach of the Charlotte Hornets but ultimately decided to remain with the Warriors.
The Cleveland Cavaliers are not the only team interested in Atkinson. The Los Angeles Lakers are also rumored to have him as a candidate for their head coaching vacancy.
Atkinson was also reportedly a candidate for the Milwaukee Bucks’ head coaching job after the team fired Adrian Griffin early in the 2023-24 NBA season, but the Bucks ultimately hired Doc Rivers for the position.
