The UAlbany football program expressed deep sorrow upon hearing the news of the passing of former student-athlete Amitral ‘AJ’ Simon earlier today.
“AJ exemplified exceptional character and camaraderie during his tenure at UAlbany. He was not only a standout athlete but also a role model on and off the field, contributing significantly to our program’s ethos over the past two years.”
Simon, who achieved 12.5 sacks in the previous season for Albany, had aspirations of being chosen in the upcoming NFL Draft and commencing his professional journey. Formerly recognized as an All-CAA first-team member for his defensive prowess, Simon spent the last two seasons at Albany after commencing his collegiate football career at Bloomsbury.
“My heartfelt condolences go out to the Simon family,” expressed Albany football coach Greg Gattuso. “AJ, you hold a special place in my heart forever, #8.”
