The Toronto Blue Jays have had a rough start to the 2024 MLB season, currently holding a 27-30 record that places them at the bottom of the AL East standings. Adding to their challenges, the team received disappointing news about their key relief pitcher, Jordan Romano.
According to the Toronto Sun, Romano is returning to the 15-day injured list due to persistent elbow issues. He struggled to recover after pitching one inning against the Chicago White Sox on May 29th. An MRI conducted on Friday night revealed that Romano has right elbow inflammation.
Manager John Schneider shared more details about Romano’s condition before Saturday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
“There’s no structural damage, just inflammation. He’ll take a break from throwing for a few days, and then we’ll assess the situation,” Schneider explained.
“We’re not sure about the timeline yet. With treatment and medication, we’ll monitor his progress,” Schneider added.
Schneider noted that Romano’s current injury is similar to the one that kept him out at the start of the season. Hopefully, the right-hander will recover quickly. In 15 games, Romano has recorded eight saves and 13 strikeouts with a 6.59 ERA and 1.46 WHIP.
In Romano’s absence, fellow right-hander Yimi Garcia is expected to help fill the gap. The 33-year-old has two saves and 26 strikeouts with a 1.23 ERA and 0.68 WHIP in 21 appearances.
The Blue Jays need all the support they can get during Romano’s recovery, and John Schneider believes his team is prepared to rise to the challenge.

Schneider recognizes the crucial role depth plays during periods of injuries and encouraged his team to seize the moment in Romano’s absence.
“This is definitely a chance for guys to step up, like they did earlier in the season,” Schneider commented on Toronto’s bullpen. “There have been outings where (Romano) has been in great shape and others where he hasn’t. Given his importance to us, (the IL stint) is the right move for him at this time.”
With key matchups ahead in June, Toronto aims to turn their season around and climb the AL East standings. Blue Jays legend Joe Bautista is confident the team will find their stride.
“Everyone knows [the Blue Jays] have a strong team on paper. It’s about coming together and finding consistency, while maintaining health. I’m excited,” Bautista told Keegan Matheson, Blue Jays reporter for MLB.com.
“You can see it happening. It’s coming. I can’t wait for these guys to get on a winning streak, hit the summer with momentum, and get back into the playoff race. They’re a talented team. It’s just a matter of time. I’m looking forward to seeing them back at the top of the standings.”
The Blue Jays have the talent to make a push, but they need to stay focused and execute. It will be interesting to watch how they perform in the new month.
