The Sooners have expanded their quarterback options with the arrival of Steele Wasel, a transfer from Akron. Wasel, originally from Choctaw, Oklahoma, brings his impressive high school record to the program, having led his team to a state championship game appearance. After committing to Akron in 2022 and redshirting in 2023, Wasel entered the transfer portal in May 2024.
Oklahoma sought to bolster its quarterback depth after losing a couple of preferred walk-ons. Wasel’s return to his home state provides the team with another skilled quarterback, complementing the already talented group led by Jackson Arnold. Casey Thompson, a veteran transfer from Florida Atlantic, is expected to compete for the backup role.
Wasel fills the spot left vacant by General Booty’s departure, who committed to Louisiana-Monroe. His addition adds to a successful post-spring transfer portal class for the Sooners, which includes notable acquisitions in offensive lineman Branson Hickman and defensive tackle Damonic Williams.
Summer workouts have commenced in Norman, gearing up for the upcoming season, which marks Oklahoma’s debut in the SEC. The season opener against Temple is scheduled for August 30th at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.
