The Detroit Lions experienced a setback in their wide receiver depth after Josh Reynolds departed in free agency. However, an analyst suggests that they have an opportunity to compensate by acquiring a more seasoned veteran.

According to Bleacher Report’s David Kenyon, the Lions are among the teams poised to benefit from a late addition in free agency, particularly in addressing their wide receiver depth. Despite recent hefty contract extensions for Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Penei Sewell, the Lions still boast a substantial $28.4 million in cap space. Kenyon proposes that they could allocate some of these funds towards acquiring veteran receiver Michael Thomas.

The Lions are confronting uncertainties at the wide receiver position.

The Lions’ wide receiver corps beyond the standout Amon-Ra St. Brown is clouded with uncertainty. Third-year receiver Jameson Williams has displayed flashes of brilliance but has grappled with inconsistency, coupled with questions about maturity following a gambling suspension. While tight end Sam LaPorta is seen as a rising star, the team could benefit from another reliable target, as Kenyon pointed out. Kalif Raymond is expected to provide complementary production at best.

Kenyon highlighted that while adding Michael Thomas wouldn’t guarantee immediate impact, it could bolster a team that lost significant production when Josh Reynolds departed for the Denver Broncos in free agency. Despite Thomas’s recent injury setbacks, he managed a productive 2023 season with the Saints, recording 39 receptions for 448 yards and one touchdown. Kenyon also floated the idea of targeting veterans like Hunter Renfrow or Mecole Hardman in free agency, suggesting the Lions have room to take a calculated risk given the current state of the position.

Lions Look for Big Year Out of Jameson Williams

The Lions may also consider internal options for enhancing their offense. Coach Dan Campbell expressed significant admiration for Williams and his developmental strides. Following the May 23 practice, Campbell lauded the rapid progress of the swift receiver, labeling him as the team’s most improved player.

Campbell elaborated on the team’s progression since April, highlighting the various phases of training. He emphasized that in the current phase, Williams stood out as the most improved player. Despite facing a setback with a gambling suspension that caused him to miss the initial games of the 2023 season, Williams gradually regained his footing. Although his performance had a shaky start, he showcased remarkable improvement towards the end of the regular season, culminating in an impactful role during the playoffs, notably scoring two touchdowns in the NFC Championship game.
