After nine seasons in the NFL, Steven Nelson has decided to retire from professional football. The former Oregon State Beavers standout and free-agent cornerback announced his retirement to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2, citing a desire to prioritize family time and pursue various off-field business ventures. Nelson, who had an impressive season with the Houston Texans in 2023, expressed pride in his football career but emphasized the importance of dedicating himself to his growing family, as they anticipate the arrival of a newborn.
During his final season, Nelson delivered a standout performance, tying his career-high with four interceptions and contributing significantly to the Texans’ playoff run, including a memorable 82-yard pick-six against the Cleveland Browns in a wild card game. Over his nine-year career, Nelson amassed impressive statistics, including 13 interceptions, 78 passes defensed, 456 total tackles, and one sack.
Nelson’s journey in the NFL began when he was drafted in the third round by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2015. He spent four seasons with the Chiefs before joining the Pittsburgh Steelers on a three-year, $25 million contract. After two seasons with the Steelers, he briefly played for the Philadelphia Eagles before finding a home with the Houston Texans on a two-year, $10 million contract.
While Nelson has decided to step away from the game for now, he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of a return in the future. At 31 years old, he intends to maintain his physical fitness and remain open to opportunities that align with his passion and timing. For the time being, however, his focus is on enjoying quality time with his family.
