During the offseason, Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is utilizing a modern strategy to rejuvenate his game.
He recently disclosed to the press that he’s focused on refining his throwing mechanics, particularly after a setback in 2023 necessitated adjustments. Acknowledging the need for enhancements following a season marked by a career-high 18 interceptions, Allen has teamed up with a sports science company to optimize the effectiveness of his throwing motion.
Josh Allen Turns to Technology for Throwing Mechanics Adjustment
Josh Allen delved deeply into his game footage during the offseason, uncovering aspects of his altered throwing motion that he wasn’t satisfied with post an early-season shoulder injury. According to Sal Maiorana of the Democrat & Chronicle, Allen adopted a cutting-edge approach to address this issue.
Utilizing digital mapping technology, Allen meticulously analyzed his throws to enhance their efficiency. Partnering with the California-based sports science company Biometrek, Allen’s throwing motion was meticulously captured by high-speed cameras, offering insights into every facet of his delivery.
While the adjustments weren’t revolutionary, Allen expressed confidence that they would enhance his accuracy and effectiveness in the upcoming season.
Describing the process, Allen likened it to refining a golf swing—requiring trust and daily dedication for results to manifest. He maintained a grounded perspective, acknowledging that every quarterback can benefit from offseason refinement to optimize their throwing mechanics.
Reflecting on his 2023 season, which saw a career-high in interceptions but also led the league in total touchdowns, Allen noted the importance of persevering through early struggles. His resilient performance down the stretch propelled the Bills to five consecutive victories, clinching the division title in the final game.

Heading into the 2024 season, the Bills’ offense will undergo changes, having lost key receivers like Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis. However, the team has welcomed new veteran additions such as Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Curtis Samuel, and Chase Claypool, along with rookie Keon Coleman, their top draft pick.
Josh Allen’s Changing Game
In the past two offseasons, Josh Allen has faced the dual task of recuperating from persistent injuries while also refining his gameplay. After the 2022 season, both head coach Sean McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane stressed the importance of reducing Allen’s exposure to unnecessary hits during games.
Allen responded by scaling back his rushing attempts, although the team still relied on his mobility, particularly in short-yardage scenarios. This adjustment resulted in Allen tallying 15 rushing touchdowns by season’s end, a figure that tied him for the most touchdowns among quarterbacks.
