Originally hailing from the Dominican Republic, Hernández initially joined the Dodgers as an international free agent back in 2016 before being acquired by the Pirates through the Rule 5 draft in 2022.

To accommodate Hernández on the roster, the Dodgers transferred right-handed pitcher Ryan Brasier to the 60-day injured list.
