Fulham, West Ham, and Brentford have expressed their condolences on behalf of Premier League clubs following the announcement from Championship team Millwall about the passing of their goalkeeper Matija Sarkic, aged 26.
Millwall released a brief statement confirming the tragic news on Saturday morning. Sarkic, who represented Montenegro internationally, last played for his country in a friendly against Belgium on June 5.
In their statement, Millwall said, “We are devastated to announce the passing of Matija Sarkic at the age of 26. Matija, a Montenegro international, proudly represented his country on numerous occasions. The entire club extends its heartfelt sympathies and support to Matija’s family and friends during this incredibly sad time.”
The club has requested privacy for Sarkic’s family and will not be making any further comments at this moment.
Sarkic joined Millwall from Wolves last summer and quickly established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper. During his debut season, he made 33 appearances for the London club.
Prior to joining Millwall, Sarkic progressed through the youth academies of Anderlecht and Aston Villa before signing with Wolves in 2020. His stint at Wolves saw him feature in three matches, including two in the Carabao Cup and one in the FA Cup.
Reacting to the news on social media, Fulham expressed, “We are deeply saddened by this news. Our thoughts are with Matija’s family and friends during this difficult time.”
Similarly, West Ham tweeted, “We are saddened to hear about the passing of Matija Šarkić. Our thoughts are with everyone at Millwall, as well as Matija’s loved ones.”
Brentford, another West London club, also shared their condolences, stating, “Our deepest sympathies go out to Matija’s family, friends, and everyone at Millwall.”
Matija Sarkic is survived by his twin brother Oliver, who is also involved in professional football, currently playing for FK Decic in Montenegro after spells with Benfica, Leeds United, and Burton Albion.
