Omar Valencia, a defender with New York Red Bulls II, has earned a call-up to the Panama National Team for the upcoming 2024 Copa America. At just 20 years old and in his third season with New York Red Bulls II, Valencia has appeared in 31 matches for the club, contributing three assists, one of which came this season inon a 3-2 victory over FC Cincinnati 2 on March 28. This season alone, he has played 11 games and recently made his MLS debut against the New England Revolution June 8.
Valencia has previous experience with Panama’s youth national teams and has made two appearances for the senior national team. His debut for Panama was as a substitute in a match against Uruguay, where he played 12 minutes in a 5-0 loss. This will mark Valencia’s first participation in a major tournament with the Panama National Team.
Before the Copa America group stage begins, Valencia and Panama will play a friendly against Paraguay on Sunday, June 16. In the group stage, Panama is scheduled to face Uruguay on Sunday, June 23, followed by matches against the United States on Thursday, June 27, and Bolivia on Monday, July 1.
