Sheffield United have initiated discussions with Nottingham Forest regarding a potential transfer for experienced defender Joe Worrall, according to sources at TEAMtalk.

Worrall has been a target for Sheffield United for some time, with a near-move to Bramall Lane reportedly falling through during the January transfer window. Instead, the 27-year-old joined Besiktas on loan, where he made a positive impression, contributing to their Turkish Cup triumph. Despite this, Besiktas have shown no interest in making his move permanent.

Having spent his entire career at Forest, Worrall’s future at the club appears uncertain, as he has struggled to secure a regular starting position. Forest are nearing their financial limits under Profit and Sustainability regulations, and are looking to offload players to comply. Worrall, with his homegrown status, represents a potential sale that would significantly benefit Forest’s financial standing.

Forest were content to loan Worrall to Besiktas due to his limited opportunities at the City Ground, and it seems unlikely he will feature prominently in Nuno Espirito Santo’s plans for the upcoming season.

Worrall happy to head to the Championship for game time

Worrall, who has been part of Nottingham Forest for the past 13 years since progressing through the club’s academy, is reportedly eager to join Sheffield United despite their recent relegation.

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder is said to greatly admire Worrall and views him as a crucial addition as he aims to reconstruct his squad at Bramall Lane for an immediate return to the Premier League. Strengthening the defense is a top priority for Wilder, especially after Sheffield United conceded a record-breaking 104 goals in 38 games last season in the Premier League.
