The Magpies initiated discussions to acquire Burnley’s primary goalkeeper nearly two weeks ago, as reported by the Northern Echo. However, there has been no definitive progress on the proposed £16m deal since then. Recent reports from Italy indicate that Newcastle might now be exploring alternative options to James Trafford.
Newcastle could bid for Juan Musso
According to a report from Tutto Atalanta, there is speculation that Newcastle might soon make an offer for Atalanta’s top goalkeeper Juan Musso. Musso, who is from Argentina, played in 12 out of 13 UEFA Europa League matches last season, helping Atalanta win the tournament with an impressive eight clean sheets. Both Newcastle and Villarreal are said to be keeping a close eye on Musso, with Genoa also showing interest in signing him. Tutto Atalanta suggests that Newcastle views the South American goalkeeper as an ideal addition to enhance their chances of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League next season, and they could make a bid in the near future.
Ideal option for Eddie Howe
With Nick Pope currently in Newcastle, the club is not seeking a top goalkeeper to immediately replace the England international, but rather someone who can provide strong competition. Juan Musso could fit perfectly into that role.
Last season at Atalanta, Musso played second fiddle to Marco Carnesecchi, who featured in 32 matches across all competitions. However, Musso excelled in the UEFA Europa League, where he was the goalkeeper during Atalanta’s victorious campaign, which included defeating Bayer Leverkusen in the final.
At 30 years old, Musso is accustomed to the challenge of competing for the starting goalkeeper position. He has shown his ability to perform effectively without needing regular game time to find his rhythm.
