The Toronto Blue Jays have cut ties with Daniel Vogelbach, per MLB.com’s transactions log, meaning they’ll cover the remainder of his $2 million salary. Vogelbach, now available to any team, can be signed for the prorated league minimum, subtracting what the Blue Jays owe.
After being designated for assignment last week, Vogelbach’s release was expected. Claiming him off waivers or trading for him would’ve meant taking on his full salary, a tough sell given his .186/.278/.300 batting line this season. With over five years of service, Vogelbach could reject a minor league assignment to keep his earnings, leading inevitably to his free agency.
Despite his limitations—he’s slow and defensively challenged, playing minimal innings at first base in 2022—Vogelbach’s hitting potential remains intriguing. He boasts a career .219/.340/.405 line with 81 home runs and a notable 15.1% walk rate. Against right-handed pitchers, he excels with a .237/.358/.445 slash line and a 123 wRC+, showing effectiveness as a platoon option.
Though struggling this year, Vogelbach’s affordable price tag may attract teams seeking a designated hitter. The Washington Nationals have struggled in that position with a 63 wRC+, while contenders like the Rays, Reds, Rangers, Royals, and Cardinals also seek offensive upgrades.
