Arizona announced on Monday the addition of Owen Goss, a transfer from Colgate University who played as a defensive back. According to Stars coach Brett Arce, Goss brings valuable skills to the team, having led his previous team in interceptions and demonstrated versatility by playing multiple positions such as safety, nickel, and corner. Arce emphasized Goss’s experience and adaptability as qualities highly appreciated by the coaching staff.
Goss’s exact role with the team will be determined during upcoming practices, though initial impressions from the staff are positive. Arce noted Goss’s strong football acumen, instinctive playmaking ability, and consistent presence around the ball. He described Goss as deeply passionate about the sport, evident in both his discussions and film analysis.
During his last season at Colgate, Goss started in 11 games as team captain and earned recognition as a first team All-Patriot League defensive back. He recorded 58 tackles, including 41 solo tackles, placing him fourth and third on his team respectively. Additionally, Goss led the team with two interceptions and three blocked kicks, defended four passes, and forced a fumble. His standout performances included a 59-yard interception return for a touchdown against Georgetown, which earned him Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Arizona’s decision to add Goss to their roster is particularly significant for their defense. His arrival addresses the need for additional talent following the departure of junior college safety Marquis Brown. Goss’s versatility allows him to compete for various positions within the secondary, potentially filling the second cornerback spot or contributing in other roles as needed. Even if another newcomer secures the cornerback position, Goss’s flexibility positions him as a key player on defense and special teams.
In summary, Owen Goss’s transfer to Arizona represents a strategic move to bolster the team’s defensive capabilities, offering depth and skill across multiple positions.
