In 2022, Toronto Blue Jays’ standout first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. stated he could never join the New York Yankees. However, in 2024, it appears Guerrero’s perspective has shifted.

The Blue Jays have faced a challenging start to the 2024 MLB season, languishing at the bottom of the AL East with a 35-43 record. Analysts widely predict they may become sellers before the trade deadline, with Guerrero being their most coveted asset.

Conversely, the Yankees are enjoying a resurgence, currently leading the division with an impressive 52-28 record. Despite this, they recently lost first baseman Anthony Rizzo to injury for at least four weeks and are reportedly exploring trade options, including Guerrero.

When asked about the prospect of joining the Yankees in a recent interview with Virus Deportivo, Guerrero did not dismiss the idea as previously expected.

“Sometimes things are said. It’s not that I’m retracting what I said about the Yankees,” Guerrero remarked. “But this is a business. I’ve discussed it with my dad [Vladimir Guerrero Sr.] and my family. It’s business. I said I wouldn’t discuss this topic again and many people have asked me about it.”

Guerrero expressed willingness to contribute to any team that acquires him but emphasized his current focus on the Blue Jays.

It’s worth noting that the Blue Jays have been firm about retaining Guerrero, the MLB home run leader in 2021, who remains under Toronto’s control through next season. However, meaningful contract extension talks have yet to materialize.

In 2024, Guerrero has maintained a batting average of .286 with 10 home runs and 35 RBIs.
