The Paraguay national, who has recently garnered interest from a Premier League team, has been a focus for Brighton this week. Gomez, who has impressed during his time with Inter Miami in MLS, has caught Brighton’s eye despite being sidelined with an ankle injury for the past two months. His strong reputation and past performances have clearly made an impact on top European clubs. Brighton made an initial offer to secure the 21-year-old’s services, but Inter Miami, according to journalist Cesat Luis Merlo, has rejected this first bid of $8.5 million, deeming it inadequate.
Merlo reported, “Brighton initiated negotiations for Diego Gómez, a pivotal player at Inter Miami. An initial offer of $8.5M has been made, but it’s deemed insufficient. They intend to revise it in order to secure the player.” With Miguel Almiron’s transfer to Newcastle United for $30 million remaining the largest sale from an MLS club, Inter Miami’s valuation of Gomez may align closely with what Atlanta United received for Almiron in 2019.
As Atlanta prepares to sell Thiago Almada to Botafogo for approximately $20 million, Inter Miami may be using Almiron’s transfer as a benchmark for Gomez’s potential value. Inter Miami stands to profit significantly from Gomez’s potential move this summer, as the 21-year-old is seen as one of MLS’s most promising talents, ready for a European transition in the near future.
However, given his recent injury absence, it might be beneficial for Gomez to remain at Inter Miami for another year to ensure regular playing time before potentially joining Brighton and the Premier League. Such a scenario could also strengthen Inter Miami’s negotiating position with Brighton, considering Gomez’s career stage where playing time holds greater importance than being on the bench for a bigger club in a stronger league.
