The Tampa Bay Rays, despite their current position in the American League East, remain a team of interest leading up to the trade deadline. They face a significant deficit in their division but are still within striking distance of the final American League Wild Card spot. However, their roster is about to be bolstered by the return of several pitchers from injury, potentially creating a surplus in their starting rotation.
According to a report by Katie Woo, Patrick Mooney, and Will Sammon of The Athletic, right-hander Shane Baz and left-hander Jeffrey Springs are nearing readiness to rejoin the Rays’ rotation after recovering from Tommy John surgery.
Baz, once considered a top pitching prospect, has shown promising form in his minor league rehab outings, recently compiling a 1.57 ERA with 35 strikeouts in 23 innings over five starts. Springs, known for his breakthrough performance with the Rays before his injury, has been gradually building up his innings during his rehab stint.
With these pitchers returning to the fold, alongside Drew Rasmussen, who underwent a procedure last year, the Rays find themselves with an excess of pitching talent. The report suggests that Aaron Civale and Zack Littell are the most likely candidates to be made available in trades. Both pitchers are under team control for several more years but could be attractive trade assets due to their affordability and track record.
Littell, claimed off waivers by the Rays, has adapted well to a starting role, posting a 3.98 ERA with excellent control since joining the rotation last July. On the other hand, Civale, acquired from Cleveland, has struggled with a higher ERA despite maintaining strong strikeout and walk rates.
