The Gophers men’s basketball team secured a commitment from Tyler Cochran, a transfer guard from Toledo, on Saturday. Cochran, with one year of eligibility left, averaged 14.4 points, a team-high 6.4 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 2.2 turnovers per game last season for the Rockets in the Mid-American Conference. The 6-foot-2 native of Bolingbrook, Illinois, was named MAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year, leading the league with 1.9 steals per game. He shot 49% overall, 53% from two-point range, and 35% from three-point distance last season.
Cochran will fill the Gophers’ last available scholarship, which opened up when freshman guard Cam Christie entered the NBA draft and was selected in the second round by the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday.
This marks Cochran’s fourth college program. The graduate transfer initially played two seasons at Northern Illinois (2019-21), then one year at Ball State (2021-22), followed by two seasons at Toledo (2022-24).
Cochran had committed to Oregon State in May but later withdrew his commitment, attracting interest from Ohio State and others.
