The Orioles announced on Sunday that Julio Teheran, a seasoned right-handed pitcher, has chosen to terminate his minor league contract with the team. Teheran, 33 years old, had recently joined Baltimore after opting out of a similar deal with the Cubs earlier in the month. He is now a free agent once more, seeking better opportunities elsewhere.

Teheran, who debuted with the Braves in 2011 and became a regular in their rotation from 2013 onwards, spent seven seasons with them as a reliable mid-rotation pitcher. During that period, he consistently made at least 30 starts per season and maintained a 3.64 ERA (111 ERA+). His durability allowed him to rank ninth in innings pitched among all MLB pitchers from 2013 to 2019, trailing only Jon Lester, Jose Quintana, and Max Scherzer in games started during that span.

Since leaving the Braves after the 2019 season, Teheran has had stints with multiple teams including the Mets, Brewers, Tigers, and Angels. His performance in recent years has seen a decline, with a 6.10 ERA and a nearly matching 6.11 FIP over 110 2/3 innings. Despite a more promising 4.40 ERA (100 ERA+) in 2023 with the Brewers, he struggled to find consistency.

NY Mets signing Julio Teheran to contract amid pitching injuries

Teheran signed a minor league deal with Baltimore before the 2024 season but did not make their Opening Day roster. A brief stint with the Mets was followed by a move to the Cubs, where he never saw time in the majors before opting out of his contract.

His time with the Orioles’ minor league affiliates this year did not improve his prospects, as he posted an 8.94 ERA in 12 starts between his spells with the Cubs and Orioles. Despite these struggles, there remains potential for Teheran to attract interest as a depth option in another team’s minor league system, provided he can regain his form and effectiveness.
