Former New England Patriots quarterback Brian Hoyer believes that the team is likely to start Jacoby Brissett, an experienced quarterback, over rookie Drake Maye when the season begins in September. Despite being drafted third overall this year, 21-year-old Maye will start training camp as the team’s second-string quarterback behind Brissett. However, reports from training activities indicate that Maye has a chance to compete for the starting position before the preseason concludes on August 25th against the Washington Commanders.

New England’s strategy is to pair Brissett with new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt to help develop Maye’s potential, even if the rookie doesn’t start during the upcoming season. Hoyer also mentioned that new head coach Jerod Mayo, a former Patriots starter under Bill Belichick, has a good rapport with younger players, which could aid in the team’s ongoing rebuilding efforts.

As of Monday, DraftKings Sportsbook listed New England with +165 odds to win more than 5.5 games in the 2024 season. This forecast has led some to suggest that Mayo should start Brissett in Week 1 to protect Maye’s confidence, especially since the team is expected to face challenges as they continue to rebuild their roster.
