The University of Washington Huskies are in the market for a new head baseball coach, as Jason Kelly has departed after two years to become the pitching coach at Texas A&M. The announcement was made by Washington’s athletic director Pat Chun in a statement shared on UW baseball’s social media channels on Sunday.
Chun acknowledged Kelly’s resignation and expressed gratitude for his contributions to the program and university during his tenure as head coach. Kelly took over the reins after Lindsay Meggs retired and led the Huskies to the NCAA regionals in 2023. However, the team struggled in 2024, finishing with a record of 19-31-1.
Before his time as head coach at UW, Kelly served as a pitching coach at several institutions, including Washington (2013-19), Arizona State (2020-21), and LSU (2022).
At Texas A&M, Kelly reunites with new head coach Michael Earley, who previously worked with him at Arizona State. Earley was promoted to head coach following Jim Schlossnagle’s departure to Texas after coaching the Aggies in the College World Series final.
Chun also announced that Washington has initiated a national search for its next head coach. The new hire will lead the team into its inaugural season in the Big Ten conference, having transitioned from the Pac-12.
According to a report by Kendall Rogers of D1Baseball, Brock Ungricht, the current coach at the University of San Diego, is a potential candidate for the vacant head coach position at UW.
