St. Louis CITY SC has extended defender Michael Wentzel’s tenure by signing him to a first-team contract that runs until the conclusion of 2024, with additional club options for 2025 and 2026. Wentzel, 22, earned his promotion after showcasing his skills in two starting appearances for the senior team earlier this season while playing for CITY2.

Sporting Director Lutz Pfannenstiel expressed confidence in Wentzel’s abilities, highlighting his assertive defensive style and familiarity with the team’s tactical approach, which facilitated a smooth transition to the first team.

During his tenure with CITY SC, Wentzel made his debut in the Concacaf Champions Cup and notably started in a 1-1 draw against Atlanta United FC. His leadership qualities were evident as he captained CITY2 to a commendable 9-3-2 record this season, anchoring the defense to five clean sheets. Wentzel’s contributions have been substantial, having played the full 90 minutes in 11 out of 15 matches for CITY2.
