The Yankees have faced setbacks in recent weeks, losing 13 of their last 18 games and relinquishing their first-place position in the American League East to the Baltimore Orioles, who now lead by two games.
While Aaron Judge and Juan Soto are having exceptional seasons worthy of MVP consideration, the rest of the Yankees’ offense has struggled significantly. Anthony Volpe started strong but has since encountered substantial difficulties, with no other players in the lineup making notable impacts.
The offensive struggles have been so pronounced that Richard Schenck, Judge’s personal hitting coach, publicly criticized the team’s offensive player development via Twitter. Reacting to a post from the YES Network highlighting Judge’s statistics in wins versus losses, Schenck lamented, “They’ve lost 13 out of 18 while he’s hitting like an MVP. The Yankees offensive player development is terrible.”

This criticism gained significant attention, reaching Yankees manager Aaron Boone, who addressed it ahead of the series opener against the Boston Red Sox. “Everyone is entitled to their opinions,” Boone told reporters. “People are going to take their shots. You can’t get all consumed with that stuff.”
Despite Judge’s outstanding performance—leading the majors in numerous categories including home runs, RBIs, and OPS—the Yankees continue to struggle. Ben Rice, recently called up to replace Anthony Rizzo, has been moved to the leadoff spot in the last two games, while Volpe has been demoted in the batting order as the team seeks solutions to their season-long challenges.
