He called me and exclaimed, “I’ve discovered this kid, he’s going to be a huge success, he’s a gem.”
Moments that alter destinies are scattered through life, and if Kayden Lucas fulfills what now appears less as wild enthusiasm and more as prophecy by Tom Swash, coach at North Somerset Regional Talent Centre, he may look back at a crucial FA Youth Cup match last August at Longwell Green as the turning point.
Debuting for Clevedon Town’s U18 team at just 15, Lucas made an indelible mark, scoring four goals in a 6-1 win, validating manager Lee Archer’s decision to field him.
Scouts from Newcastle United and Norwich City, coincidentally present after another game nearby, witnessed Lucas’ stellar performance. The next day, Clevedon received inquiries from Newcastle, leading to a trial and, eleven months later, a two-year contract with the Premier League club.
While fate played a role in bringing Lucas and Newcastle together, his journey underscores the adage that hard work and resilience shape success in football. Beginning with Weston Town U10s at nine, he quickly impressed with his speed and skill. Despite setbacks, including a failed stint at Exeter City, Lucas persevered, supported by mentors like Craig Chappell of North Somerset RTC.
Dedicated training and guidance honed his abilities, transforming him into a versatile player courted by multiple clubs. His story illustrates that while fortune smiles, it’s sustained effort and unwavering dedication that forge true success.
