The Texas Rangers have promoted relief pitcher Daniel Robert and reassigned Grant Anderson to Triple-A Round Rock. Robert will be ready to pitch in tonight’s game against the Los Angeles Angels. Additionally, to accommodate Robert on the 40-man roster, the Rangers designated left-handed pitcher Antoine Kelly for assignment.

A Closer Look at Robert

The 29-year-old reliever is finally getting his chance to shine before hitting the big 3-0. Drafted in the 21st round back in 2017, Daniel Robert’s college career at Auburn University saw him in a utility role. He’s spent several seasons in Triple-A, including the current one. Despite facing challenges in his early minor league years, this season has been a turning point for him.

Robert also had a stint with the Rangers during spring training as a non-roster invitee. His performance speaks volumes, boasting a stellar 2.35 ERA over approximately 30 innings of relief work. His strikeout rate exceeds 35%, and he impressively limits walks to just 6.1% of opposing batters. These figures mark a significant improvement from last season’s 12% walk rate and 26.4% strikeout rate.

Daniel Robert making a big impression at Rangers camp as a legitimate potential bullpen option

His consistent success has rightfully earned him a call-up to the majors. With the 2023 World Series champions pushing for another playoff berth, Robert’s potential contribution to their bullpen could be pivotal.

Kelly’s DFA

With Daniel Robert earning his call-up, the Rangers needed to make roster adjustments, opting to designate Antoine Kelly. The 24-year-old, formerly of the Milwaukee Brewers organization, brought promise with a fastball that reaches impressive speeds. Following his trade to Texas in 2022, Kelly struggled to find his footing this season, leading to his designation. His combined 9.35 ERA across Round Rock and Frisco underscored his challenges, particularly with walks in Triple-A.

Kelly’s difficulties saw him demoted to Double-A, where he continued to struggle, prompting the Rangers’ decision to move on. Despite a strong showing in Double-A last year with a 1.95 ERA, this season proved demanding for him. Texas now faces the choice of trading him or placing him on waivers. Given his potential, waivers could lead him to another team, especially considering his imposing 6’5″ stature, which could attract interest. These roster moves mark the start of what promises to be a pivotal trade deadline for the Rangers.
