Marcus Semien, who plays for the Texas Rangers, will step in for Houston Astros’ Jose Altuve as the starting second baseman for the American League in the upcoming All-Star Game on Tuesday night. Altuve has opted to rest his left hand, which has been bothering him since sustaining an injury from a pitch by Josh Winder of the Minnesota Twins on July 5.
Altuve expressed his gratitude to Astros fans for their support and votes, making it possible for him and his teammates to participate in the All-Star Game. Despite his disappointment at missing the game, Altuve emphasized the importance of healing for the second half of the season.
Replacing Altuve on the AL roster are Willi Castro of the Minnesota Twins and Anthony Santander of the Baltimore Orioles. This year’s All-Star Game will feature a total of 36 first-time All-Stars, including Castro and Santander.
Marcus Semien, who finished second in fan voting for starting second baseman, initially made the team as a reserve. This marks Semien’s third consecutive All-Star Game appearance as a starter.
In addition to Semien, Texas Rangers’ reliever Kirby Yates also made the AL pitching staff, continuing the team’s streak of multiple All-Star selections for the fifth consecutive season. Meanwhile, Anthony Santander’s inclusion brings the Orioles’ total to five All-Stars this year.
