During the Yankees’ 4-1 victory in Baltimore on Friday night, catcher Jose Trevino contributed significantly with two doubles, both resulting in runs that helped secure the narrow win. However, while providing insurance in the ninth inning, Trevino strained his quadriceps and had to leave the game before its conclusion, with Austin Wells stepping in to finish. Manager Aaron Boone mentioned that Trevino would undergo additional medical evaluations.
Prior to today’s game, the Yankees made the following roster moves:
•Placed C Jose Trevino on the 10-day injured list with a left quad strain.
•Recalled C Carlos Narváez (#94) from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.— New York Yankees (@Yankees) July 13, 2024
As a consequence, Trevino has been diagnosed with a quad strain and placed on the injured list. Up until this point, Trevino and Wells had been sharing playing time behind the plate, but now Wells is expected to assume the majority of catching duties in Trevino’s absence. While 25-year-old Narváez had a brief stint with the major-league club when Alex Verdugo was on paternity leave, he has yet to make his MLB debut. In 71 games with Scranton, Narváez has posted a .269/.386/.443 batting line with nine home runs and a 117 wRC+.
Despite having the option to call up another position player like Ben Rice, who is also on the roster, or a utility player like Agustin Ramirez who can play first base and catcher, the Yankees decided to promote a more traditional backup for Wells, given Narváez’s proficiency behind the plate.
