The Miami Marlins reported that outfielder Dane Myers suffered a left ankle fracture last Saturday. Myers will see a specialist to assess the injury’s extent, with initial evaluations suggesting surgery will not be necessary. Craig Mish from the Miami Herald indicated Myers is expected to be out for approximately 6-8 weeks. An official decision on placing Myers on the injured list could happen during the All-Star break or before the Marlins’ next game on Friday following the break.
The injury occurred when Myers kicked the clubhouse door in frustration after being ejected in the eighth inning of the Marlins’ 10-6 loss to the Reds. Myers, originally a sixth-round pick for the Tigers in 2017, made his Major League debut in 2023 after being claimed by Miami off waivers from Detroit in the 2022-23 offseason. He played 22 games last season and was showing improvement this year with a .265/.337/.422 slash line and two home runs in 40 games.
Despite the setback, Marlins manager Skip Schumaker had planned to increase Myers’ playing time, especially in center field, as the team continues its rebuilding phase. This decision aligns with moving Jazz Chisholm Jr. more frequently to second base, potentially for showcasing him to trade prospects before the July 30 trade deadline. Schumaker affirmed that despite Myers’ injury, their strategy regarding Chisholm remains unchanged.
