Pete Alonso expresses his desire for the Mets before the trade deadline

Pete Alonso, the Mets slugger and impending free agent, expressed his deep affection for New York City, the Mets organization, and their fans, stating his desire to remain with the team as the July 30 trade deadline approaches. “I’m incredibly happy and proud to be a Met,” Alonso said on Monday at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, following his early exit from the Home Run Derby. “It’s been an amazing experience. I really want to stay here; this feels like home.”

Whether the Mets decide to buy or sell at the deadline likely hinges on their performance after the All-Star break. Currently holding the third wild-card spot in the National League with a 25-11 record since June 3, Alonso has been instrumental in the team’s resurgence, contributing 34 hits, six home runs, 20 runs, and 21 RBIs during this period. Overall this season, the 29-year-old has posted a .240 batting average with 51 RBIs and a team-leading 19 homers in 95 games. “There’s a lot of uncertainty leading up to the trade deadline,” Alonso acknowledged. “But my focus is on helping this team win games every day.”

Last week, the Mets addressed their bullpen needs by acquiring veteran right-hander Phil Maton from the Tampa Bay Rays. Alonso, a fan favorite who was drafted by the Mets in the second round of 2016, has made a significant impact since his MLB debut in 2019, including a standout rookie season where he hit 53 homers, won the Home Run Derby, and earned NL Rookie of the Year honors. In his six seasons with New York, Alonso has amassed 211 homers and 549 RBIs while batting .250 over 779 games. “I have a deep love for this organization and this city,” Alonso affirmed. “Every night, I strive to give my best for my teammates and our fans.”
