Michael Malone’s reveal why Nuggets team is looking for backcourt help

Denver Nuggets coach Michael Malone was straightforward about the team’s needs for the upcoming season. During an NBA Summer League game on NBA TV, he stated, “Somebody to play behind Jamal Murray.” This need arises after the Nuggets lost Bruce Brown last summer and starting shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope this offseason. Additionally, they traded backup point guard Reggie Jackson to the Charlotte Hornets.

While not all these players are point guards, they were crucial backcourt contributors to the 2023 championship team. Now, aside from Murray, the backcourt depth is lacking, with Christian Braun likely starting as shooting guard.

This situation has led to rumors of the Nuggets showing interest in Los Angeles Clippers guard Russell Westbrook, who could be acquired at a reasonable cost. The team is also reportedly exploring other available free agents like Tyus Jones, Markelle Fultz, Dennis Smith Jr., and potentially John Wall.

Malone emphasized the team’s proactive approach, mentioning that Calvin Booth, the head of basketball operations, is diligently working on it.
