The Patriots informed the Giants that they would require a “substantial” offer to exchange first-round draft picks.

Giants General Manager Joe Schoen aimed to trade up from the sixth overall pick to the third in the 2024 NFL draft to secure a quarterback. However, he balked at the steep price demanded by the Patriots.

Patriots V.P. of Player Personnel Eliot Wolf communicated to Schoen before the draft that any trade would need to be exceptionally compelling for them to consider moving down.

In a preview for tonight’s Hard Knocks, Schoen queried Wolf, “You guys still listening, or you guys make a decision?”

Wolf replied, indicating the Patriots’ stance: “I think we’re pretty happy with sitting here picking. But, again, if you offer us 1, 2, 3 this year, 1, 2 next year

Schoen interjected, questioning whether it would need to be an offer of that magnitude.

“It would probably have to be pretty significant,” Wolf affirmed.

Schoen proposed the Giants’ sixth overall pick, their 2025 first-round pick, and another 2025 pick to move up to the third spot, which fell short of the Patriots’ expectations.

Ultimately, the Patriots selected quarterback Drake Maye at No. 3 overall, the player the Giants were targeting with a potential trade-up. This pursuit by the Giants suggests they are prepared to move on from current quarterback Daniel Jones, but the Patriots’ high demands granted Jones another opportunity to solidify his position as the Giants’ QB1.
