Former Chicago Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman, after a prolonged absence, is returning to the NHL. The Edmonton Oilers have announced that they are appointing Bowman as their new general manager and executive vice president of hockey operations. Bowman, aged 51, has been out of work since resigning on October 26, 2021, amidst controversy over the Blackhawks’ handling of sexual assault allegations involving former player Kyle Beach and ex-video coach Brad Aldrich.
In a statement on Wednesday morning, Oilers CEO of hockey operations Jeff Jackson expressed his enthusiasm for Bowman joining the team, noting, “I am excited and pleased to be welcoming Stan to the Edmonton Oilers. I believe his extensive experience and track record of success in this role, coupled with the meaningful work he has undertaken during his time away from the sport, aligns with our objective to excel across all aspects of our organization.”
An independent investigation into Beach’s allegations revealed that Bowman’s lack of action contributed to further instances of sexual abuse by Aldrich. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman deemed Bowman eligible to resume NHL duties starting July 1. Notably, under Bowman’s leadership as general manager of the Chicago Blackhawks, the team secured Stanley Cup victories in 2010, 2013, and 2015.
