According to Bowden, adding Fairbanks would bolster the Yankees’ bullpen, potentially sharing the closer duties with Clay Holmes and offering two more years of control. Despite the Yankees bullpen ranking 7th in ERA, it stands 16th in strikeouts per nine innings at 8.80. Since June 15, their bullpen ERA is 4.24, placing them 17th in the league. While Fairbanks hasn’t replicated his standout 2022 performance, he still represents a valuable addition to the bullpen.
Fairbanks currently holds a 3.28 ERA across 36 games with 19 saves out of 21 opportunities. His potential role could involve a closer-by-committee approach alongside Holmes, helping to lighten the workload on Holmes heading into the postseason. This season, Fairbanks has averaged 8.3 strikeouts per nine innings, a drop from his usual double-digit strikeouts per nine innings in previous seasons.
