The Minnesota Vikings have been hit hard by injuries at an unprecedented pace. According to Kevin Seifert of ESPN, cornerback Mekhi Blackmon suffered a torn ACL during the team’s first training camp practice. The injury occurred during the 7-on-7 drills, marking a devastating start for Blackmon and the Vikings.
Wednesday marked the beginning of training camp for Minnesota and several other NFL teams. The Vikings had high hopes for Blackmon, considering him a potential starter in their nickel defense this season, as noted by Seifert.
Blackmon, who is 25 years old and was drafted in the third round from USC in 2023, played in 15 games for the Vikings last season, starting in three. He recorded a total of 41 tackles, defended nine passes, and recovered a fumble.
Adding to their woes, the Vikings recently mourned the loss of rookie cornerback Khyree Jackson in a tragic car accident earlier this month. With Blackmon now sidelined for the season due to injury, Minnesota faces significant uncertainty in their secondary as they prepare for the upcoming season.
