The Portland Trail Blazers have lost their G-League coach, Jim Moran, to the Sacramento Kings, where he will join as an assistant coach under Mike Brown.
Sean Highkin of Rose Garden Report notes that Moran was a popular figure among the players, and his departure will be felt. His success in Sacramento could potentially pave the way for him to become an NBA head coach in the future.
At 45, Moran was highly respected by both Blazers players and staff and is considered a promising candidate for a head coaching position down the line.
Moran has been leading the Rip City Remix since 2023, guiding them to an 18-16 record last season. As the inaugural head coach of the G-League team, he is now moving on to replace his position. Prior to this, Moran served as a video coordinator and assistant for the Trail Blazers and also had a brief tenure as an assistant coach with the Detroit Pistons.
There had been speculation that Moran might be considered for the Trail Blazers’ head coaching role if Chauncey Billups was dismissed. His departure marks the end of a notable chapter with the Blazers as he embarks on his new role with the Kings.
