BREAKING: Michigan State football have part ways with their key star before fall camp began in Boulder

Michigan State football has a history with the transfer portal, a trend that dates back to Mel Tucker’s tenure, when he brought in significant talent like Kenneth Walker III and Jacoby Windmon. However, the portal has its downsides, as Jonathan Smith and Tucker have learned.

This offseason, following Smith’s hiring, numerous Spartans entered the transfer portal. While understandable given Smith wasn’t the coach they initially signed up for, the departure of notable players such as Derrick Harmon, Simeon Barrow, Geno VanDeMark, and especially Ethan Boyd was surprising. Boyd, a player who seemed deeply committed to Michigan State, made an unexpected move by transferring to Colorado after entering the portal for the second time.

Just days before fall camp was set to begin in Boulder, it was revealed that Boyd was no longer with the Colorado program and had reportedly retired from football. Brian Howell, the reporter who broke the news of Boyd’s departure, also mentioned in response to Colorado fans that Boyd is said to be retiring from the sport.

Boyd’s sudden retirement was unexpected, especially given that he had transferred to Colorado with the intention of continuing his football career. It remains to be seen whether he will return to East Lansing to complete his academic journey at Michigan State or remain in Boulder.
