The New York Yankees are anticipated to be very active as the trade deadline approaches. Although they made a significant acquisition by bringing in Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Miami Marlins, they might not be finished with their moves—at least that’s what star center fielder Aaron Judge is hoping. With their pitching performance being inconsistent recently, there’s speculation that the Yankees could seek a trade for the top available starter, Garrett Crochet from the Chicago White Sox.
The Yankees have the prospect depth to make a deal for Crochet and could likely meet his rumored demands, including a contract extension and a guarantee to stay in the rotation. However, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the likelihood of Crochet joining the Yankees seems slim.
Heyman reported that the Yankees were informed days ago that they “don’t match up” for Crochet, though other teams are still making efforts.
Given Garrett Crochet’s outstanding performance this season, the White Sox are reportedly demanding a substantial return for the 25-year-old pitcher. The Yankees appear reluctant to meet this high asking price, potentially eliminating their chance to significantly improve their rotation.
At the beginning of the season, the Yankees were in strong form, buoyed by the emergence of Luis Gil and Clarke Schmidt, along with reliable performances from Nestor Cortes and Carlos Rodon, despite Gerrit Cole’s absence. However, in the last two months, their performance has declined, with a record of 23-26 and a loss of control over the AL East.
While Garrett Crochet would have provided a major boost as a top-tier ace (leading in pitching WAR, per Fangraphs), the Yankees may now need to look at other options. They are reportedly focusing on Jack Flaherty of the Detroit Tigers, having engaged in significant trade discussions for the 28-year-old starter.
