Gil made a striking entrance into the baseball scene with an impressive performance in May. During that month, he delivered six starts with an exceptional 0.70 ERA, and batters managed only a .109 average against him. This outstanding form propelled him to the top of our Rookie of the Year rankings in early June.
However, the 26-year-old faced difficulties shortly after. Following a strong outing on June 4, where he pitched six scoreless innings, he experienced a downturn, registering an 8.85 ERA in his subsequent five games.
Despite this rough patch, Gil managed to recover. Over his next four starts, he posted a solid 2.35 ERA and improved his previously high walk rate. During this period, he struck out 30 batters and issued just five walks in 23 innings.
This impressive comeback nearly earned him the top position in our voting again, falling just two first-place votes short of Cowser.
