Due to issues with his hip and knee, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith has missed two straight practices and will now undergo medical evaluations, according to ESPN’s Brady Henderson. Head coach Mike Macdonald noted that Smith is “working through a couple things.”
The team plans to conduct imaging tests to gauge the severity of Smith’s injuries. This assessment is crucial for understanding the extent of his condition and setting a timeline for his return to practice and gameplay.
In Smith’s absence, backup quarterbacks Sam Howell and P.J. Walker are expected to run the first-string offense during practices. This opportunity allows them to gain valuable experience and prepare for potential game situations. Coach Macdonald did not offer a clear timeline for Smith’s return, leaving his availability for upcoming practice sessions uncertain.
Despite Coach Macdonald’s comment that Smith “got banged up a little bit” on Tuesday, he did not express optimism about Smith returning to practice by Friday. The results of the medical evaluations will provide more insight, but Macdonald stressed the need to wait for the results before making any predictions about Smith’s readiness.
Smith has had injury issues earlier in his career but has generally been healthy over the past two seasons, starting 32 out of 34 regular-season games. Although his performance dipped slightly in 2023, with a 64.7% completion rate, 3,624 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, and nine interceptions, his durability has been a strong asset for the Seahawks.
Smith had been performing well in training camp, impressing teammates like Pro Bowl cornerback Devon Witherspoon with his accurate throws and strategic play. As the Seahawks prepare for their first preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers on August 10, the results of Smith’s medical tests will be key in determining his status and readiness to participate.
